program is structured to follow the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA). This format provides opportunities for the Sacrament of Confirmation to participate in several rituals modeled after those that occur during RCIA. These rituals and prayer experiences are meant to foster a deeper sense of belonging the Catholic Church.
"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you,
and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria,
and to the ends of the earth."
- Acts 1:8
One Eight is divided into three phases of preparation, each with distinct features, themes and rituals that are modeled after the RCIA process. To learn more about each of these phases, click on the text links below.
Period of Inquiry (You are here.)
Period of Evangelization
Period of Mission
This session is the second of two sessions on the Period of Inquiry. Support System is a most appropriate title for this session as it forms a bond between a candidate and someone who lives their faith and is willing to support their candidate during their journey to the Sacrament of Confirmation and beyond.
GOAL OF THIS SESSION
In the midst of a teen’s preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation, it can be easy to overlook the importance of a Confirmation sponsor. Choosing a sponsor is an important step, and the role of that sponsor has in the complete preparation of a candidate is crucial. This session provides candidates and sponsors an opportunity to discuss the Catholic faith and build their relationship.
The session begins with a dramatic skit, which presents the basic tenets of the Catholic faith. Core Members will be involved in the skit. The skit moves directly into the “Proclaim” (teaching) for the session. The “Break” provides a significant amount of time for candidates and sponsors to have a one-on-one conversation using a question and answer format. This fruitful time of discussion should be a positive beginning of the candidate-sponsor relationship. The “Send” is a blessing for both candidates and sponsors as they continue their journey together.
This week at One Eight
we invite the candidates' sponsors to join us for the session. We will discuss the importance of having an mentor in the faith walking alongside them as they prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Sponsors will be challenged to grow in their faith as well, and we will provide a significant amount of time for sponsors and candidates to get to know each other better. During the 11:00 a.m. Mass, our Pastor, Fr. Theo will lead candidates and sponsors through a "Signing of the Senses."
The sponsor is an important person in the faith life of your teen. The person whom they have chosen should have been chosen out of respect and admiration of their faith. If you have not already, discuss why your son or daughter selected this individual to be his or her sponsor and what they think they will be able to learn over the course of Confirmation preparation. If the sponsor is not a relative, be sure to take some time to get to know him or her as well.
A sponsor provides spiritual help and mentorship to the candidate during his or her preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation. This person should be an active Catholic who is striving for holiness and has been fully initiated into the Church.
A sponsor assists in preparing a candidate for the Sacrament of Confirmation and continues to instruct, guide and pray for that candidate after they have received the sacrament.
SPONSOR - A fully initiated Catholic whose task it is to help the person preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation on the road of Christian life.
