In my last articles I was talking about personal holiness and getting to know Jesus. All of our goals should be to become the best version of ourselves that we can be. How can we do that if we have all of our past faults nagging at us? When we are carrying all that baggage around with us we are slowing down the work that God wants us to do. We are not at our best. Thankfully God gave us the answer. We all know that God's grace should be enough, but it doesn't always feel that way. That is why Jesus gave us confession. He told his apostles to go out and preach the good news, he also told them to forgive sins, whose sins you have forgiven are forgiven, those you bind shall be bound. I have heard others say “I don't need to confess to a priest, I tell God I am sorry” or “God knows I am sorry for my sins”. But who are we kidding? We are kidding ourselves. As humans we are great at deceiving ourselves, we conveniently forget our misdeeds, or have so many that we pass over the ones we feel there is no hope of changing. When we tell our sins to a Priest who has heard many others like ours there is no getting around the facts. We have to come clean. We have to search our hearts and find out what is holding us back from loving one another, from loving God, from loving ourselves. Once father has absolved us and we have performed our penance, what a great feeling!. A clean slate, a new beginning, a burden lifted that was weighing us down. And it shows, others can see it, they can see that something is different, something in you is changed....and they want what you have, they want that joy, that peace, that love that is oozing out of your pores. Now you are becoming a disciple, now you are evangelizing!
