Rev. John Wheeler, CSB
I would like to let you know a little about myself. I was born in Detroit, the third of eleven children, nine of whom are still alive.
I was raised in Redford Township, went to grade school at St. Michael’s of Livonia and St. Valentine’s of Redford Township. After graduation, I went on to Catholic Central High School where I graduated in 1957. From there I went immediately to the Basilian Fathers’ novitiate in Rochester, N.Y..
I have been a professed Basilian since 1958, and an ordained Basilian priest since 1968. I was a teacher for 37 years, and a parish priest for 5 years in Owen Sound, Canada. Though I taught for four years each in France and New Mexico, my main teaching work was at Catholic Central (29 years). I continue to have close ties with the school.
I was a weekend assistant in the 70’s at St. Genevieve church in Livonia, in the 80’s at St. Val’s, and since 1999, here at St. Priscilla parish. It is a real joy for me to be a part of the St. Priscilla family.
As a teacher, I mainly taught French. From 1979 till 2011, I organized French Summer Exchanges for the students. I still have very close ties with France and the friends with whom I taught in Annonay. Since my retirement from teaching in 2009, I have been doing pastoral work in Florida for several weeks each winter, as well as continuing to help out at St Priscilla and other nearby parishes.
