Life teen is a relational-based ministry, which means that the ministry happens in and through relationships. While on earth, Christ laid the foundation for relational ministry; He Himself ministered to people by entering into relationships with them: he called them by name, ate with them, and wept at their suffering. Following Christ’s model, Life Teen is powered by the Core, a group of dedicated adult volunteers, who have committed to entering into relationships with the teens for the ultimate purpose of leading them to Christ. A Core member essentially commits to accompanying the teens on their faith journey as Christ did with the two disciples on the road to Emmaus.
A core member carries out this commitment primarily through the Thursday Mass and Life Nights; these are the places where Christ-centered relationships among the teens and core are formed and strengthened. At Mass, the Core members sit with the teens and stand beside them in worshipping God. During the Life Nights, the Core members participate right along with the teens in the games, activities, prayer experiences, and discussions; they enter into the Life Nights just as much as the teens! The Core also help in executing a Life Night such as presenting the night’s main teaching or leading a small group discussion.
Any confirmed adult who has a desire to lead teens closer to Christ and is willing to participate in diocesan safe environment training is someone who can join the Core team! There is no cookie cutter model! A core member can be a parent, 2nd
year college student, grandparent, cradle Catholic, newly confirmed Catholic, extrovert, or introvert. Our God is the God who created the giraffe, the platypus, and jellyfish: variety is a good and holy thing!
