Note To Parents & Guardians: How To Discuss These Matters
NOTE TO PARENTS & GUARDIANS:
HOW TO DISCUSS THESE MATTERS
You are the first teacher and the most important teacher of your child(ren) - by both your actions and your words
Communication is a two way street - listen, ask questions and honestly respond to questions.
Use this information as a resource for discussion. Read these resources several times so that you are comfortable with the subject matter.
Know your comfort level. Seek guidance form an experienced and admired parent.
Take the opportunity to talk when you have the least amount of distractions, so you may focus on your child(ren).
Bring up one or two points while you are driving in the car. You have a captive audience. You can dialogue with no interruptions. Start with an open-ended question: What do you think about...? Have you heard about...? What would you do in this situation...?
Enjoy the conversation. It should be an open dialogue between parent/guardian and child(ren).
Keep the discussion age appropriate for your child(ren). Let their questions guide you to the level of detail they need.
LISTEN to your child(ren).
Role-play real life situations based on Keeping Kids Safe concepts.
Do whatever it takes to build your child's confidence and awareness without heightening their fear.
